AgentNotify

A localhost-only Windows tray app that gives WSL and local AI agents native desktop notifications with sound.

Role
Product developer
Sector
Developer tooling and local AI workflows
Constraints
WSL CLI development, native Windows notifications, reliable local delivery, and zero network exposure
Stack
C# · .NET 8 · WSL CLI integration · Windows toast notifications · Local HTTP service · Windows system tray
Result
A focused local integration point for task completion, progress, warnings, and failures: WSL and local AI tools can notify the desktop through one small, configurable service, with appropriate Windows sounds and no network endpoint.

The solution followed the shape of the problem.

A compact project map showing what constrained the work, what changed, and the useful outcome.

Operational friction

WSL CLI development, native Windows notifications, reliable local delivery, and zero network exposure

Intervention

Built a small Windows tray application with a localhost-only HTTP service. WSL CLI agents and local development tools send a bounded JSON request to the service, which maps it to a native Windows toast with a source label, level-specific sound, optional action link, and tray-managed port settings.

What was getting in the way

When an AI coding agent runs through a WSL CLI, the agent can finish work, encounter an error, or need a decision without a native Windows signal reaching the developer. The notification path needs to be dependable and local without exposing a listener to the network.
